LUNG CANCER PREVENTION TRIALS

Current  Long Term Smokers (older than 18 years of age) are needed to participate in the following study:

EVALUATION OF THE BIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF BROCCOLI SPROUT EXTRACT IN SMOKERS

(Protocol Number: 04-05-18-01; Principal Investigator: Julie R. Brahmer, M.D.)
                                                       
Broccoli sprout extract is a liquid form of broccoli sprouts thought to contain high amounts of a compound that might help the body break down the potential cancer causing substances.  This study will try to identify the degree to which the cancer causing substances are inactivated after consuming broccoli sprout extract.

Procedures:
Blood tests and physical exam to determine eligibility
Liquid broccoli sprout extract by mouth once a day for 3 weeks
Weekly visits in clinic for a period of 3 months

*Broccoli sprout extract , study related visits and laboratory tests done during the study will be at no extra cost for you.  Fifty dollars will be given to help cover parking costs.

Hopkins Early Lung cancer Prevention Program
LUNG CANCER CHEMOPREVENTION RESEARCH STUDY

Active or Former Heavy  Long Term Smokers needed To help in the testing of a drug for lung cancer prevention
 
ILOPROST*   

Iloprost is an orally active compound which relaxes blood vessels and has anti-inflammatory properties

PROCEDURES:     
Screening Test to determine eligibility
Clinical History and Physical Exam
2 bronchoscopies
Daily oral Iloprost* or placebo for 6 months
Blood, sputum and urine collection
8 scheduled clinic visits over a 7 month period

COMPENSATION:  $ 100 for each attempted  bronchoscopy
