The research component of the CRFP has provided an unprecedented opportunity for Johns Hopkins, through its nationally top-ranked Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center (SKCCC), to apply our world-class research specifically to the cancer problems in the State of Maryland. To date, 37 CRFP-sponsored research awards have been made to Hopkins investigators. Some examples include:
· Baltimore City’s minority communities are known to be three times as likely as the national average to be infected with a virus that is linked to cervical and oral cancer. CRFP researchers at Hopkins have established clinical and epidemiological studies to learn how to prevent the development of cancer in the community.
· A 30-year study in Washington County is advancing cancer knowledge in Maryland. A Hopkins investigator is quantifying the effects of active and passive smoking on all cancer sites.
· In collaboration with Suburban Hospital in Montgomery County, a Hopkins physician researcher is attempting to identify a genetic alteration associated with, and a potential biomarker, for colon cancer.
· Hopkins investigators are leading the first attempt to identify protein biomarkers associated with the onset of lung cancer after exposure to cigarette smoke.
· Maryland and Baltimore City consistently have some of the highest cancer rates in the nation, possibly linked to exposure to many important environmental carcinogens through air, water, dust, and soil. Hopkins researchers are identifying and prioritizing cancer causing agents in Maryland, based on the potential for exposure and risk, in order to identify causes and prevention of cancer.
Here at the Kimmel Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins, our leadership and researchers are dedicated to using these funds to the full extent. Our CRF investigators speak for themselves with their increasing recruitment, effective education, screening, and treatment services, along with working collaborativley with clinicians and researchers outside of Johns Hopkins.
